Statistics on Public-Private Partnerships - November 2008
-
Over 75 public-private partnership
contracts were signed between 1998 and 2008 at the provincial
and municipal level in Canada, representing a total value of
over $28.4 billion.
-
So far in 2008, 14 P3 projects
have reached financial close with a total agreement value of
$5.3 billion. Fourteen projects began construction so far in
2008.

These represent a wide variety of
sectors, including: landfill & recycling, water & wastewater
treatment, hospitals, justice & corrections, recreation &
culture, public transit, roads & bridges, schools, energy and
government services.
Federal PPP
Support
-
In Budget 2007 and 2008, the
Government of Canada announced a $1.257-
billion Public-Private Partnerships Fund (P3 Fund) to support P3
projects. A federal
P3 office, PPP Canada Inc., was also established to further the
development of
Canada’s P3 market. Prior to 2007, the Canada Strategic
Infrastructure Fund
helped finance several PPPs in BC, Alberta and New Brunswick.
Provincial &
Municipal PPP Support

The Governments of British
Columbia and Quebec have agencies (Partnerships BC, PPP Quebec)
that are dedicated to the identification and delivery of
public-private partnerships.

The Government of Ontario formed
Infrastructure Ontario in 2006. The agency is responsible for
the delivery of its Alternative Finance and Procurement
projects, which include private finance and private sector
operation.

The Governments of Alberta,
Northwest Territories and New Brunswick have pursued several
PPPs and are in the process of procuring or constructing more.

The Governments of Nova Scotia and
PEI recently announced plans for partnerships with the private
sector to deliver public infrastructure.

Municipalities in almost every
province and territory have pursued PPPs in recreation &
culture, water/wastewater, landfill gas, downtown redevelopment
and public transit.
