Canada's first major foray into P3 schools began in Nova Scotia in 1997 when the government issued a Request for Proposals for 39 schools under a net lease model (6) and turn-key model (33). The program was cancelled in 1999 following a change in government and two of the three proponents subsequently contracted back the school operations to school boards.

Around the same time, the Government of New Brunswick procured two schools under the P3 model, the Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton and the Evergreen Park School in Moncton. They began operation in 1999 under a 25-year contract.

A more recent wave of P3 schools are being developed in Alberta and New Brunswick. The ASAP 1 and ASAP 2 school bundles in Alberta are procuring 28 elementary and middle schools under a 30-year design-build-finance-maintain (DBFM) agreement. A middle and elementary school in Rexton and Moncton, New Brunswick, are being constructed under a design-build-finance-maintain-operate (DBFMO) model.

The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships has assembled several resources to assist members and those interested in P3 schools projects..
